Week 9 Updates

Hello 4B Families!

I cannot believe we are at the end of our school.  It seems like just yesterday I had 30 third graders and now I have 30 fifth graders!  Thank you for the opportunity to educate your children.  It is a task a I do not take lightly, and one I enjoy very much.  Your children should feel so proud of what they have accomplished this year; both in intellect and maturity.  It has truly been my pleasure to watch my students grow throughout the year.

In Language Arts this week, the students are working on a play.  They will not be responsible for memorization or costumes as this is more of a fun final activity.  I was very pleased with their work on their historical figure papers and I cannot wait to see their presentations.  Today, the students created a notecard with some main points to discuss for their presentation.  Tomorrow, they will time each other to ensure they are not over or under their time limits.  As a reminder, souvenirs are due the day the student presents (Wednesday or Thursday).  If your child intends to dress up, they will present Wednesday.  After that, I will select volunteers who are ready to go.  The students DO NOT need to prepare a PowerPoint or poster board for the presentation.

In Science, we took our last quiz today on the respiratory system.  We will spend the remainder of the week looking at some fun power points, and possibly a jeopardy review.

In History, we are continuing our discussion of the Constitution.  We spent some time discussing that declaring yourself to be a country does not mean everything is organized and perfect.  There are lots of details to figure out, with lots of different opinions being offered.  Ask your scholar about the power Congress had at first!

As we go through the week, I will be helping the students clean out and take things home.  This is done with the glimmer of hope that Friday will not be a crazy mess with your student being sent home looking like a pack mule.  If bags are needed, I will send an email to let you know.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Week 8 Updates

Hello 4B Families!

If you have been within the Great Hearts network in the past, then you know that we operate with our normal pace right up until the end of school.  For the new families this year, we maintain the same standards all the way to the very last day.  I know the students are all excited with the end of the year approaching, but we still have a lot to do before the end arrives!

One such task is the presentation of historical figures, which will take place on the 24th and 25th next week.  To celebrate the hard work of your scholars, we will have a Continental Breakfast in the classroom as the students present.  If your scholar would like to dress up as their figure, they may do so on this day only.  There is P.E. scheduled for that day, so I would recommend packing your student with a change of clothes.  Mrs. Sinkykin has created a sign-up for breakfast items and volunteers.  The volunteers should expect to arrive by 7:50 and leave by 8:50.  I cannot wait to see the students present; I remember last year they were so proud to show off their hard work!  Please click the link below if you wish to bring an item or volunteer:

In Language Arts, the students are doing a great job with their research essays.  The rough drafts are due tomorrow and the peer editing process begins.  The final paper will be due on Friday, May 19th.  As students wrap up the editing process, we will be encouraging them to begin typing as soon as they are able.  At the very least, you can start helping with the bibliography.  The students all completed note cards with source information, so they should have all of the information they need to get started.  We will discuss a bibliography format tomorrow in class.  Again, I am not looking for a perfect format as the main intent is to expose the students to this process.
On Wednesday, we will read our last chapter in Mr. Bowditch.  The final quiz will be an essay and the students will be allowed to use their pre-writing worksheet during the test.

In Science, we are wrapping up our discussion of the respiratory system, with a quiz scheduled on Monday.  Students will be given their study guides tomorrow and we should have some time to get it started in class.  It has been so much fun discussing this and the circulatory system with class!  We have even gotten off topic a time or two due to the interesting range of questions being asked.

In History, we will conclude our Revolution unit tomorrow with a brief quiz.  Today, we went through our note packets and highlighted the information they should study in preparation.  Later this week, we will start a unit on the Constitution, but there will not be an additional assessment.

As always, thank you for your continued support!

Week 7 Updates

Hello 4B Families!

I cannot even begin to express how grateful I am for all of the tokens of appreciation I received last week.  I already feel so lucky that I get to work at a job I love and that I look forward to each day with my students.  Last week was so much more than I ever expected and I thank you all.  Family support helps make my job easier, and I truly feel I have received that support from all of you.  I must admit, I could not get through the kind words shared by students and parents without getting a little misty-eyed.  It has been my pleasure to be your children's teacher this year.

In Language Arts, we are approaching the end of Mr. Bowditch...hopefully we can make it through without any more heartbreak!  Our last Bowditch test is schedule for Friday, May 19th.  This will be in the format of an in-class essay.  The students will receive the prompt one day prior and spend the class time writing out a draft.  For our research project, we will be turning our notes into an outline, which will help with writing the rough draft next week.  The final draft will be due on Monday, May 22nd with presentations on May 24th and May 25th (if needed).  Any student who would like to dress up as their figure will present on May 24th during a classroom celebration (details to follow soon).

In History, we are wrapping up our unit on the American Revolution and segue into learning more about the Constitution.  The final test will take place on Tuesday, May 16th, with a review taking place the Monday before.  Today, we learned about the British trying to move the fighting to the southern states.  Ask your scholars why the British thought this would be a good idea...and why it didn't quite work out.

In Science, we began our new unit on the respiratory system and discussed how it relate to the circulatory system (ask your scholars!)  Our final test for science will take place during the last week of school, with a date to be announced next week.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Week 6 Updates

Hello 4B Families!

One quick announcement before I let you know what your scholars are learning this week.  I am going to be out of the classroom on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (I already let the students know last Friday).  Mrs. King will be in charge and I will be checking my email in case anyone needs to get a hold of me.

In Language Arts, I am so impressed with how well the research portion of the historical figure project is going!  Everyone has shown a lot of dedication and thoroughness, which will pay off when the students are creating their rough drafts.  By next Monday, the students will be finished with their note cards and they will begin creating an outline from the material they gathered.  Tomorrow, we have our Mr. Bowditch quiz over chapters 9-16.  We spent our class period today going over the correct answers for the study guide, so the students should have all the necessary materials for studying.

In History, we are approaching the end of our American Revolution unit.  As such, we will most likely be having a quiz around mid-week next week.  Today, we learned about the battle at Saratoga and how it was a turning point in the war.  The students also practiced their outlining skills by reading the chapter and telling me the important facts to include.

In Science, we are approaching the end of our circulatory system unit.  There is a test scheduled for Friday, which has a slim possibility of getting pushed to Monday depending on the notes we get through this week.  The students will be getting their study guides tomorrow and we will go over the answers on Wednesday with a review on Thursday.

Week 5 Updates

Hello 4B Families,

Today was the last day of AZ Merit testing; everyone did a great job showing perseverance during our testing days!

In Language Arts, we are going to start researching for the historical figure research paper.  Please make sure your child is coming to school with their sources as the bulk of their research will be completed in class.  Additionally, the students have a test on Mr. Bowditch, chapters 9-16 next Tuesday.  The students will be given their study guides on Friday and we will review on Monday.

In History, we are having a really short quiz on chapters 11-14 of the Revolutionary War unit on Wednesday.  We will be reviewing tomorrow and the students will use their fill-in-the-blank notes as their study guides.

In Science, we are continuing our discussion of the circulatory system.  We have been having so much fun in this unit!  We keep falling behind in our notes because we are having such great classroom discussions.

As a reminder, the concert is on Thursday night and it is mandatory.  Students need to be in the classroom by 6:00 P.M. for attendance.  If you have any questions, please consult Ms. Blasi's blog or send her an email.

Thank you for all of your continued support!
