Week 5 Updates

Hello 4B Families,

Today was the last day of AZ Merit testing; everyone did a great job showing perseverance during our testing days!

In Language Arts, we are going to start researching for the historical figure research paper.  Please make sure your child is coming to school with their sources as the bulk of their research will be completed in class.  Additionally, the students have a test on Mr. Bowditch, chapters 9-16 next Tuesday.  The students will be given their study guides on Friday and we will review on Monday.

In History, we are having a really short quiz on chapters 11-14 of the Revolutionary War unit on Wednesday.  We will be reviewing tomorrow and the students will use their fill-in-the-blank notes as their study guides.

In Science, we are continuing our discussion of the circulatory system.  We have been having so much fun in this unit!  We keep falling behind in our notes because we are having such great classroom discussions.

As a reminder, the concert is on Thursday night and it is mandatory.  Students need to be in the classroom by 6:00 P.M. for attendance.  If you have any questions, please consult Ms. Blasi's blog or send her an email.

Thank you for all of your continued support!

Week 4 Update

Hello 4B Families!

I hope you all enjoyed the R&R weekend as much as we did!  We have another busy week ahead of us with our ice cream party on Wednesday and our second AZ Merit test on Friday.  As a reminder, the ice cream party is our prize for collecting the most tax credits in our school.  The students have been looking for to this for weeks.

On Thursday night, we will do our best to send your children home with little to no homework so they can get a good night's rest before AZ Merit.  This test is part one of the Math and Language Arts portion; part two will take place on Monday, April 24th.  Once again, please send your child to school with a labeled, disposable snack.  I heard excellent reports of their perseverance during the writing test, so thank you for stressing the importance of taking one's time.  Please encourage this behavior for the remaining tests as well.

In Language Arts, we are asking that the students bring their sources to school on Tuesday, April 25.  We will be teaching the students how to keep track of their sources, so writing a bibliography is an easier process.  Additionally, we will be teaching the students how to sort their information and put it into the appropriate paragraphs.

In History, we are continuing our unit on the American Revolution and the events leading up to war.  I passed back the graded tests from last Thursday, so be sure to check in with your student about their grade.

In Science, we are finishing our unit on plants and taking our quiz tomorrow.  I intend on having a review session in the classroom during lunch for any interested students.  Once we finish, we will begin our unit on the circulatory system.

Thank you for all of your support and have a wonderful week.

Week 3 Update

Hello 4B Families,

As you know, our first AZ Merit test is tomorrow.  It is our writing test, which I know is intimidating to the students.  We have practiced quite a bit and we will discuss the virtue of perseverance before the test tomorrow morning.

In Language Arts this week, we were going to have our Bowditch quiz on Wednesday because we have a history quiz on Thursday.  However, the students voted to have both quizzes on Thursday, so we could have an extra day of review for Mr. Bowditch.  The quiz will cover chapters 1-8 with questions about vocabulary and content.  There will also be one essay prompt for a short paragraph.

In History this week, we are having our first American Revolution quiz on Thursday.  This quiz will cover the first 13 colonies starting in the 1750s up through the Boston Tea Party.  The students have received their study guide, which we will be working on more tomorrow.

In Science, we are continuing our plant unit and began our discussion of plant reproduction.  Our first quiz on this unit will take place next Tuesday, the 18th.

As a side note, I will be sending out emails to some families about grades.  We are still a couple of weeks from our mid-way mark, but I wanted to keep you informed before we get to Performance Notices.  This is a shorter quarter, so it's important to remain vigilant in our final push of the school year.

As always, thank you for your continued support!

Week 2 Updates

Hello 4B Families!

This week is going to be fairly light on the front end due to the AIMS test tomorrow.  Please make sure your child gets a good night sleep and that their snack is in a disposable container.  It would be very helpful if their names were on their snacks, too.

In Language Arts, we are reading up to chapter 8 in Carry On, Mr. Bowditch.  So far, Nat has faced a lot of obstacles.  Asking about Nat's attitude and perseverance would make for a great family discussion.  The students will be receiving their historical figure assignments by the end of the week.  We will go over the guidelines for writing assignments on Monday.

In Science, we will be starting our plant unit on Wednesday.  This unit is a great introduction for fifth grade, when the students will spend much more time exploring plant-life in greater detail.

In History, we are laying the foundation for the American Revolution by discussing key events in the British colonies.  We will be using history to practice outlining, which will come in handy for their research paper later.

Thank you for all of your support!
