Week 9 Updates

Hello 4B Families,

We have a busy week ahead of us!  On Wednesday, Archway Lincoln is excited to host Jump Rope for Heart.  Students will raise awareness about heart health through jump-roping. Coach Cook will be sending out more information, so keep an eye out for his email.

As some of you may have noticed, the dates for AZ Merit and AIMS have been posted on the Archway Lincoln calendar.  Although we do not teach to the test, we want to make sure the students are familiar with the available tools on the test.  Later on in the week, I will be walking through the test directions with the students following along.  We will discuss the different tools and how to access them.  Next week, the students will be able to explore the testing environment and use the features.

In Science this week, the students have a test tomorrow, which will cover the layers of the atmosphere, air masses, fronts, tornadoes, and hurricanes.  We reviewed the study guide in class today and I will have a review session in the classroom during lunch.

In Language Arts, we are finishing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz tomorrow.  On Thursday, the students will receive their essay prompt and begin pre-writing in preparation for the in-class essay on Friday.  The students were given three poems today and they are responsible for selecting one to memorize by March 17th.  We will be discussing these poems in the week leading up to spring break, in addition to a few of my favorites.

In History, the students will be taking another quiz either this Friday or next Monday, depending on how far we get with our notes tomorrow.  Regardless of when the quiz will take place, the students will get their study guides tomorrow.  The quiz will cover the three explorers we discussed in class, Spanish missionaries, and the Mexican-American War.

As always, thank you for your continued support!

Week 8 Updates

Hello 4B Families!

I apologize for the lateness of this blog post; this three-day weekend has me completely turned around!  The field trip to the MIM on Friday was a HUGE success; we all had such a great time!  I hope your scholar told you all about it over the weekend.

In Language Arts this week, we are quickly approaching the end of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  Our last assessment will come in the form of an in-class essay next Friday.  We will prepare for the essay on Thursday by completing a pre-writing map, which the students will be able to take home and refine prior to the quiz.  After finishing our book, we will spend the last two weeks before spring break discussing short stories, plays, and poetry.  The students will be given three poems next Monday, of which they will select one to memorize on March 17th.  Speaking of memorizing poems, the students have been working on memorizing "The Violet" by Jane Taylor and it will be recited on Thursday of this week.

In Science, we finished our discussion of tornadoes and we moved on to discuss hurricanes today, which will be wrapped up by Thursday.  Students will receive their meteorology study guides on Thursday, in preparation for next week's test (on Tuesday or Wednesday).  By studying about these giants of weather, it gives us a great opportunity to discuss how they can affect human life.

In History, we have finished our discussion of ancient people in Arizona and we are moving on to discuss the influence of Spanish and Portuguese explorers in America.  Although some of these explorers did not explore Arizona specifically, their explorations laid the foundation for additional discoveries.

Have a wonderful, short week and, as always, thank you for the continued support!

Week 7 Updates

Hello 4B Families,

A couple of reminders for the week:
  • PLEASE DO NOT BRING VALENTINES TO SCHOOL TOMORROW.  At Great Hearts, we celebrate the virtues by focusing on kindness and friendship, not on candy and gifts.  If your children brings in any Valentines, they will have to stay in their backpacks and taken home at the end of the day.
  • Our class field trip to the Musical Instrument Museum is on Friday.  If the student would like a snack, please bring a DRY snack as it will be eaten on the bus.  Every lunch item must be disposable and packed in a paper or plastic bag.  The sign-up for small group leaders was sent out this afternoon, and there is one spot left.  We also need one person to let us borrow a cooler for the day.  The link to sign up is here:

In Language Arts this week, we will be taking our second quiz on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on Tuesday, February 14th.  By Friday, we will be through chapter 18.  We are also starting our next packet to practice our analytical skills in Language Arts.  The focus for this week is persuasive writing, which should be familiar to the students.

In History, we are having a quiz on the regions and ancient people of Arizona on Thursday, February 16th.  I have passed out the study guides today and we are going over them as a class tomorrow.

In Science, we are finishing up our study of air masses and fronts and moving on to discuss thunderstorms.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Week 6 Updates

Hello 4B Families!

I have a couple of quick updates for you before I divulge this week's academic discoveries.

This Week: Field Day is this Thursday on February 9th.  Debbie Sinykin sent out an email with information, including a link to the handbook for dress code and an additional sign up for parents to help our classroom, specifically.  This Friday is Great Heart's Day in addition to being a Half Day.  We will be doing a small activity in the classroom, which will focus on the virtue of Friendship.

Next Week: On Wednesday February 14th, we are being treated to a visit by the Arizona Opera.  They will be performing Dvorak's 'Rusalka'.  I believe Ms. Blasi will be discussing this piece with the students, but feel free to explore this piece with your child.  Our class Field Trip will take place on Friday, February 17th.  I will be sending out a sign up on Wednesday, February 8th after our staff meeting.  The sign-up will include the details of the day, and I will need three parents to join us.

In Language Arts, we will be finishing up our next section of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and we will be taking a quiz on chapters 8-15 on Tuesday, February 14th.  Students will be receiving their study guides on Thursday and we will review on Monday.

In History, we are learning about the original people who populated Southwest, and follow the trail to the people currently living in Arizona.  We will be having our first quiz on Arizona history next Thursday, February 16th.  Students will be receiving their study guides on Monday.

In Science, we are continuing our exploration of the atmosphere.  Last week, we discussed how air pressure can impact our weather.  This week, we are building on that concept by discussing the influence of temperature and air pressure on weather.

As always, thank you for your continued support.
