Week 5 Updates

Hello 4B Families!

In keeping with a short week, I will provide a short post.  We are officially half-way through the first quarter (even as I type it, I can hardly believe how quickly time has gone by)!  Our classroom culture is growing stronger each day and I feel we are finally reaching the moment in which there is a shift from 30 individuals to 1 classroom.

Although we had quite a few quizzes last week, most of our units are continuations rather than brand new.  In history, we are beginning our discussion of the Middle Ages.  Ask your child about their country flag and laws!  In science, we are learning about earthquakes and we will begin our discussion of volcanoes at the end of the week.  In Language Arts, we are swiftly approaching the end of Pollyanna; look for the final quiz in about two weeks.  We will also begin writing paragraphs by the end of the week in addition to our second Touchstone class.  Finally, we are learning about the order of operations in Math.

Finally, a couple of announcements about the classroom.

We are ready to begin parent reading groups!  Our classroom liaison, Mrs. Sinykin, has graciously created a sign-up for parents interested in participating.  We will be accepting 2 volunteers once a week to join us on Thursdays for literature.  As you look at the sign-up, please allow time for other parents to sign-up before choosing multiple time slots.  Rule of thumb, try to stick with three for now and check back on Friday to see what is available.   The link is available on the left-hand side of the blog page, under the book picture.

I have consulted with the other math teachers and I am going to extend invitations for tutoring tomorrow afternoon.  Please keep in mind that tutoring is reserved for students who are in danger of failing math due to a lack of concept comprehension.  If your child has a low grade in math, but it is the result of missing homework or classroom behavior, I will not be inviting your child to tutoring as we believe those students are capable of obtaining higher score with some minor guidance.  I will take no more than 5 students and the group may change based on what I see during tutoring time.  Details outlining when/where will follow in a follow-up email to applicable parents.

Thank you all for your amazing donations for Mrs. King--she was very surprised and touched.  I appreciate all you do to support us and I am excited for another great week!
